Charlotte Home Inspector Finds a Heat Duct Blowing Into the Attic With Infrared Camera

October 26th, 2010 · No Comments

Charlotte Home Inspector Preston Sandlin was recently doing a home inspection and an infrared scan on a house off Providence Rd in Charlotte NC.  The infrared camera allows the home inspector to read all of the surface temperatures at once.  When there is an anomaly either hot or cold that doesn’t fit you have to investigate futher to see what is going on.  Sometimes when there is a cold spot it can mean moisture intrusion or missing insulation to cause the surface of that wall to be cooler.  Warm spots can mean missing insulation on an attic of loose or a disconnected duct.  What happened here was that they never cut the register for the this heat duct and it has just been blowing on the back of the ceiling drywall for 10 year costing the homeowner unecessary cash.  The infrared camera allows the home inspector to see things that the naked eye can’t.
